cataleah rhoslyn pavlenco. seventeen. bi-curious. human/student. willa holland.
S T R E N G T H S + [ARCHER] Leah is extremely in to archery. It is something she has been doing since she was eight years old. Something her mother had wanted her to learn. Leah can shoot any type of bow, but favors her compound bow with a scope. Why? Because it is deadly accurate. She is able to hit most things she aims at dead on, without hesitation. Almost ten years of solid practice has enabled her to be pretty good at her chosen hobby. She does enjoy using a plain out wooden bow and arrow sometimes though, just for fun. + [Responsible] When I say responsible I mean more than just the responsible that you expect from a seventeen year old. I mean someone that takes care of her younger siblings without qualm. She has been raising her younger siblings for the last two years now. A hard job, but someone has to do it. She is also a great student and works full time. But don't think she is perfect, just because she takes care of business doesn't mean she is an angel. + [Independent] Leah can easily handle and take care of herself. She doesn't rely on anyone to help her with anything. She takes care of her family and of herself. Most people wouldn't know from looking at her, how much she really does. She takes care of the bills, makes meals, cleans, everything a mother would do. Leah is more of an adult than most adults out there...most of the time. + [Her siblings] Without her siblings, Leah would be broken. Her siblings keep her going, make her get up each morning and be a better person. Leah honestly would have given up on life if it weren't for her brothers and sisters. She knows she has to be there to take care of them because no one else will and she couldn't stand to see them taken away by child services. Her siblings are also something she would protect to the end of the Earth. Mess with them and you had better hope that you can run faster than a speeding arrow. There isn't much that Leah wouldn't do for her siblings, so I suggest you don't push your luck on that front. + [Smart] Leah is smart, not just in the book sort of way. She is street smart. Knows how to navigate her way around and deal with life itself. She has learned to grow up fast and mature even faster. She is the adult now, a role she was given way too young. Leah is book smart as well, taking advanced classes and passing with flying colors. She wants to make a future for herself and for her family. And that means applying herself. She is tired of living the life that she lives now. Sure she might not make it to the life she wants, but she is willing to try for as long as she can. She can't afford to give up hope. Leah doesn't seem like a smarty pants, but believe you me, she is. A attribute she tends to hide pretty darn well. Most people think she is a failure based on general attitude alone. W E A K N E S S E S + [Leukemia] Yes, you read that correctly. Leah was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of two and has lived with it on and off since then. She has been in remission a few times, but has been fighting to stay alive for most of her life. Having leukemia tends to make it so that she gets sick easier, she tends to bruise a lot easier, get light headed and not feel well more than a normal person. If she gets a cut it tends to bleed more than it normally would. More will be explained in her history about her leukemia. Just keep in mind that she keeps this little tidbit to herself. Only her family knows that she is sick. + [Drinking] Leah didn't used to be a party girl. She used to be the perfect little angel that everyone saw her to be. But that all changed a year ago. Leah enjoys alcohol. She enjoys that fact that it erases reality for a few hours. She can just disappear into another world and forget about all of her problems. She doesn't drink every night or anything, but she does like a good party as much as the next person. She is a sucker for good booze as well. This is one attribute that leads people to believe she is a rebel child. Why would a brain aka a smart girl, be a partier? + [Hot guys...or girls] A year ago when Leah started partying she also realized that it didn't take a hot guy to turn her on, a hot girl would do the trick as well. She started fooling around with guys and girls alike, why not? Life is short so why live it to anything but the fullest. That is her philosophy. Leah isn't really that biased between boys and girls. She will have a good time with whomever peeks her fancy at that particular moment. There is plenty of love to go around, well maybe not love, but definitely plenty of lust. Leah could be considered a skank, but really she doesn't care. People labeling her is honestly the least of her worries at this point in her life. + [Recreational drugs] Much like the alcohol, the drugs are merely a way for her to escape reality for a little while. She has only ever done marijuana and coke. Along with smoking just regular cigarettes that is. Of course with her condition you might think that all of this drinking and smoking and such is a terrible idea, well when you know the whole story you might not think so anymore. You see, Leah isn't stupid. She wouldn't be doing any of this if she didn't think there was a reason not to. But really, what more harm can come to her body than the cancer that is ravaging it? + [Her siblings] They are the only ones that are able to make her feel terrible after a night of partying. Not bad enough to never do it again, but still remorseful. They are why she keeps her grades up and puts on a good face. She wants to make them proud, despite knowing that she is disappointing them in other aspects of her life. Cancel out the bad with the good you know? Her siblings are also the only way to get to her or hurt her. Hurt one of them and it is like you are cutting off one of her own limbs. Anything else in her life is meaningless, they mean everything to her. L I K E S + [Animals] Yes I know it seems weird, but Leah loves animals. All sorts and sizes. She actually works at a veterinary clinic and really enjoys it. Being around animals is easy. They don't judge, or ask questions. They don't care that she is sick. They just love her because she takes care of them. Animals are easy, people are hard. + [Zebra] The pattern that is. She loves anything zebra patterned. Her interior to her car is zebra, her bedspread, etc. She is instantly drawn to anything that has that pattern. She isn't overly obsessed though. She doesn't like dress in all zebra or anything. It is just appealing to her. + [Writing] It is a way for her to express her feelings that she otherwise keeps locked up. She can write anything in her journal without the fear of being judged or laughed at. Leah might put on a strong front, and act like a badass, but deep down she is nothing but a scared girl. Scared of dying, of being made fun of, scared for her family. Her journal is one of her most sacred belongings. + [Tattoos] Leah loves tattoos, and loves getting them too. She has five so far, going against her father to get them. Knowing that her father disapproves of them only makes her want them more. They are another way to express herself. Another way to show the world who she is without really showing them. Abstract art in a way really. She has "Genevieve" tattooed in the shape of a heart on her pelvic bone. She has a sparrow on her left shoulder blade. She has a tribal bow and arrow on her right foot. She has the word survivor with a line through it crossing it out on her left wrist. And she has "Viata asta-i bun pierdut, de n-o traiesti cum ai fi vrut" which means that your life is wasted if you don't live it the way you like tattooed on the left side of her ribcage. + [Languages] Leah has a love of languages and learns them whenever she can. She is fluent in five right now, but is constantly trying to learn new ones. Something about being able to understand different people, from different places is appealing. She currently is fluent in Romanian, English, German, French, and Italian, in that order. Romanian being her native language. For some reason she has an apt for learning as well and a great memory. Bordering on photographic really which is why she does so good in school. D I S L I K E S + [Her disease] She hates that she has a weakness that is so deep. She hates that her entire life is reliant on one little thing. Her leukemia is the bane of her existence. It has the ability to either leave her alone or kill her. Two very different things. Being sick is not a fun thing, especially when you spend a lot of time hiding it from others. + [Her father] The man is a complete and utter waste of space, now at least. He used to be an amazing man and an amazing dad. But then tragedy struck the family and he completely shut down. Becoming a useless, sometimes abusive, bastard. Leah harbors a very deep hatred of the man she used to call her father. She no longer bestows that title upon him though. She rarely even speaks to him actually. Unless she has to. + [Authority] Leah has a hard time dealing with being told what to do. She likes to live her life her own way and not follow the orders of others. But she does have to listen to people quite often and she hates it. Teachers that treat her like a normal human being are fine. Teachers that power trip, not so much. She has gotten into plenty of heated argument with people in authoritative positions. She doesn't care who they are, if she feels like they have wronged her she will say so. She isn't shy. + [Crowds] Though Leah is social and not a shy person. She doesn't necessarily like being in crowds or being the center of attention. She tries to sort of fly under the radar. Not being a total loser, recluse, but not being popular either. Too much attention leads to too many questions and too many people trying to pry into her person life. Not cool. + [Hospitals] She has spent so much time in them that she holds a deep loathing of them. In a way she fears them. She fears what happens behind those closed doors. She has probably spent more time in hospitals than out of them in her entire life. Blood transfusions, bone marrow transfusions, the works. Tests and then answers. Sometimes good, sometimes not. She just hates being in a hospital and will do anything to not go in to one. H I S T O R Y Cataleah Rhoslyn Pavelnco, daughter of Sveyen and Genevieve Pavlenco. Sister to Roran, 13, Lillian, 11, Viktor, 8, Julianna 8, and Valencia, 5. She was born to well off parents. Her father a surgeon, her mother a lawyer. They had always wanted a big family and Leah was just the start of it. She was born in Bucharest, Romania. The hometown of her father and mother both. She was a happy and healthy baby girl and developed very normally for the first two years of her life. However, when she turned two she started to get sick. Not behaving normally, always tired, coughing, crying, etc. Her parents took her to multiple specialists and after a month of testing, received the bad news. "Your daughter has leukemia" is a phrase that no parent ever wants to have to hear. Her mother burst into tears while her father sought out treatment options. At two, Leah began chemotherapy. Despite being sick, she still behaved mostly like a normal two year old once her treatments started helping. She made friends, played outside, and did everything others like her did. The only difference was she got sick easier, and got more sick than others, if she fell then she got more hurt. Little things that made her life more difficult. But at two she didn't know that something was wrong with her. At five she started school and also went into remission for the first time. There was a 60% chance that the cancer would return. She went to kindergarten. Learned to read and write and do math. She enjoyed her time there. Making new friends. Discovering that boys indeed did have cooties. She learned of her love for animals and got a dog. At this point she also had a one year old brother. A brother she loved dearly already. She was cancer free for two years. At seven a new baby entered the family, a little sister this time. And a mere matter of months after her birth, Leah started getting sick again. The treatments started up once more. Now older and more able to understand what was going on, she became scared. She didn't want to die. She wanted to be normal like the other girls her age. She wanted to grow up and be a princess or a housewife, or something. This time her hair started to fall out and she grew increasingly more hysteric over it all. Not wanting to go to school because she was afraid she would be made fun of. Of course, people that new of her condition didn't dare make fun of her. Mostly people just felt bad for her. Sorrowful looks followed her everywhere. This time the cancer only last a year before going back into remission. At nine her next brother and sister were born, twins. With four siblings now she could often be found helping take of her them. A little mother in her own right. She loved helping her mother care for everyone. Already wise and mature beyond her years. Her final sibling was born five years ago when Leah was twelve. Another sister. The Pavlenco's had the large family they had always dreamed about. And Leah had been cancer free for five years. All was well. Leah attended school. Practiced the archery that she had picked up when she was eight. Learned to horseback ride and found a joy in writing. She played soccer and baseball. She did ballet and gymnastics. She was a typical preteen girl. She took an interest in boys, made life long friends. Life was good. The family was doing well, business was good. The children got everything they needed and wanted. When Leah was fourteen the cancer came back. This time worse than before. Doctors in Romania suggested the family take her to California to a well known cancer treatment center there. Having never been out of Romania, they were hesitant. But when Leah was hospitalized and given two blood transfusions as well as a bone marrow transfusion the family uprooted and moved. Sveyen was able to get a new job, and Genevieve stayed home to care for the children now. Leah began being treated in California now, their new home. A year went by and Leah had to be homeschooled because she was too weak to attend normal school. She spent all of her time inside, only able to venture outside for minutes at a time. She couldn't even walk up the stairs in her house without becoming out of breath. This is the same year that her mother died. It was raining, the roads were wet, and a drunk driver ran a red light. They say Genevieve died at the scene. Leah was lost, numb. She didn't know what to do. She was still so sick and now her mother was gone. She cried for weeks, refusing to leave her room. Not eating well or anything. She was hospitalized again and had multiple IVs and a feeding tube stuck into her. A therapist tried to help her through her trauma. Sveyen turned to booze and became a deadbeat. At work he would perform his duties but at home she merely drank his sorrows away and seemed to forget he had a family. Leah was finally put back into remission at sixteen. By this time she was raising her siblings since her father had become useless. He would sometimes get really drunk and hit her, but he never laid a hand on her siblings, mostly because she made sure of it. Leah started high school at Midnight Harbour High and did her best to continue her life. Only a few months after being declared cancer free it came back. Doctors did all they could, but finally she was told that she wasn't responding to treatments anymore. All they could do was try and help ease her pain. They gave her some medications and instructions to get regular check ups. Leah started partying around this time. Drinking and trying drugs to ease the pain of her life, both physical and emotional. No one knows about her cancer except her family. She started sleeping around with boys and girls to feel wanted and needed. The love she had lost when her mother died, and when her father went AWOL, was being supplemented by the people she slept with. She never formed attachments to them though. Knowing it was pointless since she was going to die, sooner as opposed to later. Now she is just trying to live her life as normal as possible. But is struggling to stay positive. ___________________________________________ This was only the second time that Ana had ever set foot into the club called pulse envy. Mainly because her last time here had ended with her helping some guy fight off some big thug looking to cause trouble. That didn't exactly help her cause of staying under the radar, so she had laid low for a little while. Not returning back to the scene of her crime until she was sure that people wouldn't remember or had at least found something better to talk about. Tonight she was once again bored, didn't want to work on more homework, and so was here to have some fun. Something she was actually finally learning how to do. She had decided to wear a pair of black skinny jeans, a deep purple lace tank top, a pair of black boots, and her brunette hair was down in large barrel curls. She wore enough makeup to blend in, yet stand out at the same time. Her jeans tight enough to show off the curves of her lower body and her lace tank top see through enough to show off her upper body. She enjoyed looking good, seeing the looks she would get, the attention. Of course she never let herself fall to deep into the pretend life she was living. Always on edge. She arrived at the club, flashed her ID and then headed to the bar and ordered a screwdriver before taking a seat and facing the crowd. Watching everyone dancing. Last time she had danced with a good dancer named Jack, tonight she wasn't here for him, she was here for herself. She didn't need a man to have fun, but they did seem to make things slightly more fun, more quickly. She scanned the crowd for anyone that wasn't dancing, someone alone. As she did this a man with dark brown hair, bright blue eyes, wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a black button down, approached her and asked her to dance. She smiled and downed the rest of her drink before placing her hand in his and heading onto the floor. She had remembered some of the moves she had learned last time and started moving to the beat of the music. Smiling and enjoying the feeling of the man's hands on her body. She had never experience much physical touch and was starting to learn that after over a year outside of the facility, she liked it. It was nice to be touched in that way, nice to have someone want you in a way other than the one that the scientists wanted her. Tonight she had made one little slip up though. She hadn't covered her alpha tattoo on her left wrist. Thinking that the club was so full of people that no one would really see her wrist anyway. Plus she didn't really have anything to cover it with in this outfit. So far no one had seemed to notice and if they did, then they didn't comment. The guy pulled her against him, letting his lips graze across her neck, her collarbone, her shoulder. With that she pushed him aside with a sly smile and stepped off the floor for another drink. It couldn't go too far, she couldn't let herself fall too far into the trance of the music, the alcohol, the men. It was easy to get lost in it all, but she was better than that. She pushed her hair back out of her face, it was already hot in here with all the bodies bumping and grinding on each other. Her eyes scanned the room and then suddenly landed on someone new. Her was a bouncer, that much was obvious. He was broad, tall, brunette hair, blue eyes, handsome as all get out. He seemed pretty sure of himself. Confident, yet somehow out of place. Almost like how she had been her first night here, and a little like she was tonight. She couldn't help but train her gaze on him, magnetized to him for someone unknown reason. Who was this mystery man? brea. 21. 12 years. |
