The world can be a difficult and harsh place. Unless you are a streetwise, fast thinking, opportunist, then the world is nothing more than an eagerly anticipated challenge. For Anastasia her day to day life was unpredictable, but always exciting. She found new ways to get by, and new targets to steal from. Every pocket picked was an opportunity for a jackpot or a bust. Everyday new and unsuspecting victims made the mistake of crossing her path. A few wallets here and there added up over time, even with people keeping their money on a debit card she would still luck up and find a few twenties every now and again. She never bothered to waste her time feeling guilty over what she had done; she had seen enough injustices in the world to understand that right and wrong made no difference. It all came down to having enough money for cheeseburgers and corsets.
Her opinion of the world changed almost as quickly as she changed her boots, however she never faltered in her believe that the humans that occupied it were mindless sheep. They worked their pointless nine to five jobs, struggled to pay their mortgages, and raced to get married just so they could get divorced. They never lived their lives, or enjoyed what opportunities and adventures life truly had to offer. Despite that, she had many disadvantages in life but she never envied others. She lived her life exactly the way she wanted too, she made her own rules, and had no one to answer too.
She had enough friends who would trade with her for things, or people who would offer her shady under the table jobs. And on occasion she would find the fool that would give her what she wanted in exchange for a shy smile and a few bats of her eyelashes. Anastasia did not exactly find herself beautiful, but she couldn’t deny that she did have a certain charm and it worked well when she needed it too. Like when she went to Don’s, a tiny hole in the wall burger joint that only the locals knew about, and it was one of the best kept secrets of the city. Don’s son usually started tripping over himself when she walked through the door. This was a relationship she had been cultivating for weeks. It started off as innocent conversation, and charged into full fledged flirting. She had no interest in him aside from the large quantities of free food he could provide her with. Luckily, the nausea she felt after playing the flirty angle was usually settled when she received a large cheeseburger with extra bacon for free. He always forgot to charge her, as was the plan. In her eyes, it was harmless, and everyone won.
Don’s was particularly busy on that night after the football game, so she got her greasy food to go and exited as quickly as possible. She made it two blocks down the street when she had consumed over half of her burger, the fries a distant memory. It was late in the evening, and the sky had become completely dark. She had no desire to go home, at least not until she was sure her mother would be passed out. She planned on going to some of the hotspots that the other teenagers liked to hang out in. Most of them were probably drunk by now, and wouldn’t notice their wallet was missing until morning. Drunk jocks were a favorite target of hers.
Suddenly the street became empty, and everything became still. She felt something was wrong, and her every instinct was screaming at her to move. She relied on those instincts, and she trusted them. Behind the alley beside her she heard a sharp scream pierce the air, and she darted forward. She was anything but a hero, she was a survivor, and she did not venture into dark alleys. She dared a look behind her, but saw nothing. When she turned her head, it was too late and she crashed into the person in front of her.
