Janelle Aurora O'Hara 16 Straight. Slayer. Hayden Panettiere.
S T R E N G T H S +Likable – She is a very likable girl, and she has that innocent girl next door appeal. She usually tends to have a smile on her face, and is generally approachable. Girls usually get along with her because she is just cute and not breathtakingly gorgeous, so they do not feel threatened by her. Guys tend to like her because of her playful tomboy attitude. People are naturally drawn to her on account of her happy, upbeat attitude. She isn’t fake, and she says exactly what she means, so people know that they can go to her with their problems. She makes friends fast, and rarely brings people down with her drama, so they enjoy being in her company. +Tough –She handles her problems delicately and patiently, and doesn’t act rash. She thinks things through, and has the ability to take on a great deal of emotional pain. She rationalizes everything, to try to understand her problems and make them more manageable in small doses. Her emotional problems build up over time, as it is a long process for her to deal with them, however in the end she manages to come out sane and a better person. +Loyal – She understands duty, honor, and friendship. This is where her determination comes in, she will do whatever she can to help, and sometimes this can lead her into danger. She can be loyal to a fault, when it comes to the right person. When she says something she means it, and when she gives her word it is as thick as blood. She is who she is, and she won’t compromise herself, but other than that once she either trusts you or loves you then you can count on her no matter what. +Empathy – While she does posess a mild sort of the supernatural version, she does feel things very strongly. She hates to witness other in pain, because her heart goes out to them so much that she feels it as well. This has crafted her into a very kind and sympathetic human being. This helps her form close bonds easily. +Observant – She pays attention to detail thanks to her OCD. She notices small things that others might simply miss. This can range from someone mismatching their socks, or a speck of blood that has been overlooked by others. From time to time this skill proves extra useful, but for the most part she just uses it to dress herself and organize things. +Quick Learner – She learns fast, and catches on to new things easy. This was a helpful skill when she was a cheerleader. Even better when she discovered that she was a slayer. While she is not the best slayer, she does pick up on things fast and she is learning and steadily improving. +Facing Fears – Janelle was afraid of the dark like most children, but she did not cower under the covers, she stood up on her bed and dared whatever monsters that were lurking to come out and face her. She has fears, but she also has the tendency to be bold enough to face them. W E A K N E S S E S +Naive – She is young, and ignorant of the ways of the world. She has not been far from home, or seen much of the world. Most of the people that she knows she has known from birth. She has little experience with people that are not local to her town, and some may see this as a way to take advantage of her. She is trusting, and even if she may have a bad gut feeling about something she will likely push it away. She hates seeing the bad in people, and only wants to believe that people have her best intentions at heart. She believes that people see the world the same innocent way that she views it. +Blonde – She has a lot of ‘blonde’ moments. Sometimes logic and common since escape her. She isn’t dumb, she is just severely lacking in street smarts. She is sensitive about this, and sometimes it hurts her feelings when she feels left out. Sometimes when she is clueless she tries to fake it and just go with it so that way she isn’t called out on her lack of knowledge. +Brutal – If you do not want Janelle’s opinion then do not ask for it. This is a warning. She is blunt, harsh, and to the point. She is very observant, and will tell you exactly what she thinks, even if it is not what you want to hear. She is so sweet, so sometimes her honest words come as a shock. The fact that they come through a smile is sometimes confusing. She was raised to never lie, and she took it to heart. She says what she thinks, and often doesn’t realize that her words have come out so direct. +Hopeless Romantic – She falls in and out of love at an alarming rate, and she puts her entire heart into it. This also means she gets heartbroken easily. She puts herself out there, knowing the risks first hand, but she does it anyway because she honestly believes in love and that there is someone out there just for her. She always falls for the wrong guy, and it only leaves her to get hurt in the end. +•Bad Boys – They are a weakness for her, just like most girls. The more shady, and the more dark the past the more she is drawn to them like a moth to a flame. They have a air of danger and the thrill of the excitement that comes with it. Janelle is sweet, innocent, and naive and this pairing never works out for her. It only leads to a broken heart and an empty pint of Ben & Jerry’s. She loved her home in Texas. The friends that she had fought so hard to keep were there. She was also leaving the animals that she had tended to and cared for. Her entire life and everything she knew was on a small farm in the middle of nowhere, and she was leaving it all behind. After her grandmother was taken by cancer, she and her father struggled to maintain their life. But, with Janelle gone to school and her father at work there was no one to maintain the daily tasks that went along with having a small farm. Janelle had been closer to her grandmother than anyone else in her life. After her passing, Janelle dissolved into herself. Her mother was never around, and her father had no choice but to work long hours. Janelle felt lost and alone. She sunk into a deep depression for several long years. When she was around fifteen a few kind kids started talking to that quiet girl who sat in the corner. Having friends helped her come out of herself imposed isolation. She slowly attracted more friends, and steadily gained a fair amount of popularity. She maintained a close group for friends, and eventually made the cheerleading squad. Once she found a bit of happiness she vowed to never let it go. To this day she hates depression and fights back by being as perky and as upbeat as possible. Her easygoing nature started attracting men, and Janelle was unsure what to do with this attention at first. She was shy around potential suitors for a while, until she realized the fun that could be had. She fell in and out of love at an alarming rate and dated a handful of the boys in her school. She might have gotten a reputation, but she always broke up with the boys when they started pushing for sex. She became something of a challenge for the boys, but she refused. She got teased from time to time about being the innocent girl, but it was better than the alternative. She wanted to wait for something special, for a prince charming to come in. At least that was what she thought she wanted until she realized exactly what her type was. She found herself in relationships with men that were much too old for her and came with an edgy side. It never ended well, and she usually took her heartbreak home and drowned her sorrows with a pint of ice crème and some quality time with the animals. Her father’s job took him everywhere, leaving Janelle alone for days at a time. Her mother had hardly been a part of her life; she was always off chasing one fantasy or another. The last time she had even heard from her mother had been on her birthday. She was in Los Angeles trying to get work as an actress because she had given up on last year’s dream of being a model. Originally, her father’s promotion had come as a bit of a shock. One day they were struggling to pay the bills and the next he was given a free home, a new company car, and an impressive raise under the condition that he move to Midnight Harbour. It was an opportunity that presented itself almost overnight. Her father convinced himself that he was finally being acknowledged for his hard work. Janelle was doubtful. It was almost as if the powers that be themselves had wanted them to move. Janelle understood that they were struggling and it could not have come at a better time. It was around that time that Janelle started having the nightmares. Janelle was hanging out with her friends at a local hangout when she met her temporary watcher. Her name was Clara and she was a beautiful, British woman. That night she explained who Janelle was, and what that meant. Also, what strings had been pulled to ensure that Janelle would end up on the hellmouth, also to make the transition easier for her father. Clara took her out to the graveyard, and proved to Janelle that she was not insane by finding a vampire. Janelle relied on instinct and sloppily took down her first vampire with the cuts and bruises to show for it. She was told she would meet her official watcher in Midnight Harbour. ___________________________________________ It had been a few days shy of a week since Jimmy had died. Janelle had known him briefly, but she had never considered him to be a friend. They had only talked a handful of times, and he was always there with a spare pencil in math class if she needed one. She had appreciated his company in the short time they had spent with each other. They were from different ends of the social ladder. Janelle was a cheerleader, Jimmy was the head of the chess club. When Janelle was failing algebra, Jimmy had selflessly offered to help her study in the library after school. A safe place where none of Janelle’s friends would run into her. She was not the best when it came to school, but she still made an effort. Jimmy was patient and kind. She enjoyed spending time with him, he even taught her how to play chess when she got frustrated with math and needed a break. Before he died, she did notice him in the hallways. He was becoming different, dressing different, acting strangely. She had even heard he wasn’t showing up for chess club any more. It was as if he had changed overnight. They said he was a victim of gang violence. He was found early one morning in a graveyard without any blood in his body. At least that was what the police had said. Janelle knew better. The nightmares had been happening more and more frequently, but the worst one was oddly enough on the night Jimmy had died. She had been having the terrible dreams since before she moved from Texas, but they had only gotten worse since moving to Midnight Harbour. She could not make out what was going on at first. Just one horrible image after another. Monster after monster and the same images of people her age dying in terrible ways. I was not something that she was used to. Her dreams were usually stupid and her nightmares were a far muted version compared to what she was experiencing. She felt responsible for his death, she was the slayer, and even though she was only beginning to understand what that meant she knew that his death was directly related to her not being a better slayer. She had only been in California for a week, and she was struggling to catch up. She had been accepted almost instantly once she made the cheerleading squad, but that still did not make her life easier. If anything it filled any free time she may have with practice. Janelle was popular, and that meant people expected things from her, no matter how tired she was. She still had to go out and ‘be seen’ at the local hangouts, or risk being seen as a leper. She had yet to find her watcher; she was told that one was to be appointed to her by the same woman that explained what being a slayer meant. She had virtually no training, and her few short sessions with her temporary watcher Clara proved to her that she was now a very different girl. Janelle was smart enough to know that she was far from ready to venture out at night on her own, or else another slayer would be chosen almost immediately. She was easy prey, or at least she felt she was. She had never walked down a dark alley, let alone into a cemetery arena to fight to the death with the undead. Under Clara’s guidance, she had managed to take down two vampires, but she was not ready to go it alone, even if it meant innocents like Jimmy would suffer. Kenzie. 24. Almost a decade. |
